CYF IN THE AGE SOCIAL MEDIA: Presentation by Baba Claris Madhuku and Baba Owen Dhliwayo on 16th July 2011 at Glen View revival

CYF in the Age of social media

Objectives
This teaching has one major objective with two specifics.

CYF can benefit if they use social media properly

Proper management and administration of CYF face book account
Increase of CYF face book membership from the current 197 to 500 by end of December 2011.

Interpretation
Christian Youth Fellowship is as defined in the CYF Constitution, with a clear mission to bring young Christians together for the purpose of overcoming their spiritual and physical needs. It is important to take note that spiritual challenges are as summarised in 1 Timothy 4 v 12.On the other hand the physical challenges are(the list is not exhaustive)

Behavioural change and HIV/AIDS
Unemployment
Gender disparity and male dominance
Poverty and Child headed families
Generation Gap
Lack of skills and funding
Uninspiring leadership and followers
Mismanagement of change
Social media refers to online publication that allows end users to engage in multi-directional conversation in and around the content on the website. Examples of social media are

Blogs
Twitter
My space
LinkedIn
You Tube
Face book
Flicker

Environmental Scan
The topic becomes relevant because social media, particularly the face book, has taken the world into frenzy where it has become an indispensable part of the marketing mix to reach customers and clients. It is a fact that social media has overtaken traditional media formats such as

Print
Brochures
Flyers
E-mail
The benefits of using social media generally outweigh the dangers especially when used properly. Should CYF members ignore social media, the council will be disadvantaged.

Statistics
Close to a billion people in the world use social media with 75% of these being FB users. In Zimbabwe where the official population is 12,084 million 1,422 are social media users. This statistics show that about 12% of the population uses social media. The CYF council has a membership of approximately 3 000(estimation) with close to 500 as paid up membership. With our FB attracting only 197 to date, it means that less than 7% of the CYF members are on facebook .It is generally estimated that slightly above 15% of the CYF council are internet users. It is my argument that if the CYF Face book account is used properly the current membership will double by end of December.

Concerns
Social media provides more details than solicited. It would be important for the users to make a decision on what they need without giving themselves in or away. The user must know oneself first as a rule.
The majority of users tend to ignore privacy yet there is a danger of facial recognition. Many face book users has been trapped by criminals due to too much revelation of privacy. CYF users must provide decent details and pictures that reflects CYF values
Fatigue is picking up. Users must remember that this excitement may fade as soon as something new comes. The correct approach is to be calm and use it properly without getting overzealous.
Social media has low cost, unlimited access and a global reach therefore favourable and user friendly.
The CYF face book needs to be managed responsibly by avoiding ziwada wada, where we end up with more than one face book groups. Though this is voluntary discipline ought to be involved where the National Executive has to be involved. A case study can be the way CYF T-shirts and badges are protected.

Information Packaging on Social Media
Social media is an important “window” between the CYF Council and the wider society. Youths, advisors, senior friends and even pastors find a place for both service and fellowship due to its nature of being an agenda setter – focus on an issue and project it at the audience. At the same time, social media has a legitimate role in informing, persuading and interpreting events and thus become a forum for the exchange of views in order to bring about positive societal change.

It is, therefore, imperative to note that youths have to communicate in order to make progress in society through our religious convictions, and each one of us should take part in the exchange of information in order to share our faith related experiences and bring about positive change.

However, information packaging should strike a balancing act. On one hand, we must address real issues and on the other hand ensure that our information posted on social media edifies others for the glory of God. As CYF members, we are required to adhere to our values and attitudes. We are guided by our Christian faith because social media is about relationships and the love of Christ through our dynamic fellowship. Social media entangles the web of our social fabric hierarchy as it is a relationship without any overlay of power. Thus, we have guiding principles;

Guiding Principles on Information Packaging
CYF as a Community of Young Worshippers – 1Peter 2: 9 - 10
The message we post on social media should reflect that God has a divine purpose for us and even the CYF Council. As a community of young Christians, we must take time to look ahead, to search for God’s purpose and seek out our divine destiny.

A circle of Friends - Proverbs 17: 17
In this world of endless challenges in our lives – school, family, work, we have lowered our aim and lived with a low expectancy. On the social media pedestal, CYF needs to be and also to find Spiritual allies who constantly remind us of our gifts and abilities and the ONE who gave them to us

Friends

Self Intimates

Christian Youth Fellowship - 1Peter 3: 8 – 9
Let us all examine our motives through focusing on what God wants us to build. The Israelites just wanted to get out of Egypt and did not look ahead to the end of the journey. Likewise, many youths would want to use social media tools for survival mechanism and cover one’s hurt often ending up spewing one’s pain on everyone around. We need to seek knowledge of the social media within God’s blessing. CYF on the social media is truly an instrument for God’s peace and blessings and we have a responsibility to love, honour, respect and fellowship with others for the glory of God.

Wary of the Demonic Forces on Social Media - 1 Peter 5: 8 – 9
Why would the devil tempt us on social media?

Sarah was a woman who basically had lost her faith due to her assessment in the physical world. Let us not fall into the habit of seeing everything in the natural, at the same time insisting on calling ourselves Christians. Our role is to hear and obey the things we hear our Father in Heaven say. Whenever the devil is talking to you through social media, you must know that he is meddling with the child of God – let God deal with the devil.

Information Content - Psalm 141: 3 – 4
What do you appreciate or esteem most? What are feelings towards an issue or someone?

Make sure your purpose have the Heavenly seal of approval
Hold fast to your vision and move towards it as steadily as Christian like
Ask God to open your eyes to His invisible purpose in your life

CYF elects new executive

By Thomas Madhuku

At the 2011 National AGM at Mount Selinda, Christian Youth Fellowship (CYF) had another opportunity to elect the new executive tasked with steering the council to 2012.
The elections were historic in that it is the first time an election was held without much contestation as members were unanimous on the elected candidates. It needed only two and half hours to complete the electoral process. This development demystified the perceptions held by many that elections are interruptive and consume the bulk of AGM time.

The new National Executive is as follows:
President- Edmore Mahlanganise
Vice President- Liberty Chidoko
Secretary- Priscillar Chimanyiwa
Vice Secretary- Michael Dhlakama
Treasurer- Tellme Madidi
Advisor- Mai Munyamani
Senior Friend Rep- Baba Mangezi
Urban North Rep- Morgan Matsiya
Urban South Rep- Takudzwa Guzete
Save Valley Rep- Freedom Kumbula
Highlands Rep- Shepherd Sigauke
2012 AGM Venue- Masvingo

We want to thank the outgoing President Sister Carol Mlambo now Mai Chokoza for a smooth transition in spite of compelling challenges prior to the AGM. She stood her ground in defence of the girl child and leadership. She managed to organise one of the best AGMs in the history of CYF though she had other commitments.
It is also important to thank pastors and senior friends who graced the AGM in their numbers. The outgoing Advisor now the Eastern Conference Baba Munyamani who was and still remains a pillar of strength and wisdom to the council, we salute your sacrifice and dedication.

We call upon every CYF member to rally behind this new executive for the realisation of our goals and objectives.

GOD REALLY LOVES YOU...SO PLEASE HEAR HIS VOICE

By Brother Alfred Nenguwo

Ranganai was a good-looking young boy who lived in the Save valley. His summer days were filled with times of walking through the woods, playing with friends, and fishing in the Save River Fishing was by far his favorite thing to do. Just about every day during his summer holiday, he would dig up some worms and head off, pole in hand, for a day of fishing.

This steamy hot day was like most others during Ranganai's summer break. Waking early, he could hear the river calling him to come fish. Ranganai quietly walked out the front door, grabbed his pitchfork and worm pail from the porch, and walked into the woods to search for bait. He turned over old stumps and dug under leaves hoping to find worms. Under one old stump he hit the jackpot. The ground was writhing. In two minutes he had all the bait he needed, and in 15 minutes he was at the river.

Reaching into his bait bucket, Ranganai pulled out a big worm. He double hooked it and tossed it into the water. He noticed a stinging in his hand, but filled with the excitement of the moment, he paid no attention to it. Within 30 seconds, Ranganai had a strike and pulled in a nice fish. Wow, he thought, a fish in the first minute. This is unbelievable!

He put the catch on his stringer, hurried to rebait his hook, and tried his luck again. Once again he felt a stinging sensation in his hand as he threw his hook into the pond. He didn't have time to worry about it. Within just a few seconds, he had another huge fish. He fumbled the next time he baited his hook-his hand felt numb and stiff. But Ranganai was too excited about catching another fish to give it much thought.
At the end of only an hour of fishing, Ranganai had caught eight large fish. This was definitely his best fishing day ever. He was so proud of his accomplishment that, even though there was plenty of day left to fish, he threw the heavy stringer of fish over his shoulder and dashed down the dirt road toward home to show off his catch to his mom and dad.

The locals started to congratulate him on his catch of fish. With a smile and a victory whoop, Ranganai held up the stringer. An Young man stopped him, and strode over to Ranganai. His eyes hadn't deceived him- arms really were red and swollen to about twice their normal size. Exactly where have you been and what bait did you use to catch all those fish?" The young man asked Ranganai, already guessing the answer.

I found some special bait under an old stump," Ranganai boasted. "These worms really wiggle good," he commented, handing up the bait bucket for inspection. After a close look at the worms, the youung man went into fast-forward. Securing the bucket he then scooped Ranganai and his stringer of fish on his back. Spinning a U-turn on the gravel road, he sped off to the hospital, but Ranganai was already dead.

What the young man had discovered was that Ranganai had been fishing with baby puffadders. Ranganai's deadly bait brought him a good morning's fishing but cost him his life. Had Ranganai stopped fishing after that first sting, he could have been saved. One bite from a baby snake won't kill a person who gets treatment in time. But Ranganai was having fun and didn't bother himself with the small voice of pain in his hand.

Then, as his hand grew numb, even that small voice was silenced. Playing around with sin is like using baby snakes for bait. Sinning seems harmless to young people who don't recognize sin and are unaware of its deadly consequences. The more sin you get into, however, the more numb you become to its sting. In the excitement of the moment, you ignore the still small voice of God warning you of danger and encouraging you to choose life instead of death.

GOD REALLY LOVES YOU...SO PLEASE HEAR HIS VOICE SO THAT YOU CAN BE SAVED.ALL IS WELL

Words of wisdom to the CYF- National Executive

By Baba Trymore Sithole

The 2011 national CYF AGM is worth to be remembered in every sense.lt reminds me of the years when we used to enjoy being a full member of the CYF. The 1st Guest speaker was too hot to handle and he paved a way to a historic AGM-"Musaronga Rwendo neasingaendi" a saying which reminds me of those who used to say "Tinenge tiriyo Chirinda" but they failed. This years AGM was typical of those events worth not to be done annual but maybe 2 or 3 times a year.

Well l just wanted to talk about the new executive. Allow me to say that the elected committee is the one that we all wanted. CYF l am tired of saying this and l hope today it will not fall on deaf ears. We elect people to lead us and make CYF a vibrant group worth to be joined not to make their pockets full tough the CYF funds. let me warn the elected members that,"its not time to sleep, fold your hands and relax, its time to think and come up with tounchabale things to present as achievements at the next years AGM. Next year we will give the President the stage to tell us about the achievements made and I will ensure that we will have progress review b4 the end of this year." We need to have a CYF conference centre and this has to be started this year. Think about it. We need to have as many projects as possible to generate income to the CYF pocket because we are tired of being burgers all the time.

Please lets leave politics alone and unite as a Christian group. lets forget our differences and unite for development to take its course.

President Mr Mahlanganise its high time you take this platform to deliever your best service and we promise you all the suport that you want.

CYF let no one despise your youth.

l wish you the best in executing your duties.

God bless you all

God desires man to exercise his reasoning powers

By Charity Mtema
God desires man to exercise his reasoning powers, and the study of the Bible will strengthen and elevate the mind as no other study can.Yet we are to beware of defying reason, which z subject to the weakness and infirmity of humanity.

lf we would not have the Scriptures clouded to our undrstanding so that the plainest truths shall not be comprehended,we must have the simplicity and faith of a little child...ready to learn and beseeching the aid of the holy spirit.

A sense of the power and wisdom of God and of our inability to comprehend his greatness should inspire us with humility and we should open His word as we would enter His presence with holy awe.

Wn it comes to Bible, reason must acknowledge an authority superior to itself and heart intellect must bow to the Lord. There is much reading of the Bible without profit and in many cases a positive injury.

Therefore the word of God must be opened with reverence, prayer and the thoughts and affections must be fixed upon God so that the enemy will not take control of our thoughts, and suggests wrong interpretations.
GOD BLESS YOU ALL.
